In his working life, John Field was a consultant statistician and data analyst, working in many diverse areas including tropical agriculture, the environment, viticulture and winemaking, electricity distribution, medicine and health.

For over a decade John has been involved in family history research. His first book, Boots, Shoes and Seeds: the life of Peter Field, was awarded the 2015 Don Grant Award for a biography with a family history focus by the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies, and the 2017 Family History Book Award by the Queensland Family History Society.

He lives in Adelaide with his wife, Rosie. They have three adult children.
